First Date Faux Pas: Salads are for rabbits not a first date!

It’s that time again for my First Date Faux Pas! Monthly, I will share with you how to avoid some well intended or not so well intended first date faux pas. In this post we will discuss the First Date Faux Pas of ordering a salad as a main course on a first date.

Last month when I started writing this blog I had a struggled with my opinion. I had some conversations and read many many articles about this first date faux pas. The struggle I was having was the fact that I know what most men think when they see women order salads as a main course on a first date. This is a conversation that men have over and over with one another and hate when their dates do this.  Having said that I also understand as a society we have evolved and there are many people that are choosing salads over burgers. This really comes down to personal choice and understanding and respecting it.

So how do you bridge the gap from the stereotype to how we have evolved. I have come up with a few ideas.

If your first date is going to be a meal and you want to have a salad make it a lunch date.

Most people do not think twice when someone orders a salad at lunch time. Most of the time people understand that many do not want to eat a heavy lunch and with how common working lunch meetings have become we see our associates eat salads all the time. I think once you venture into the dinner hour something is triggered in your dates head that finds a salad not appropriate.

Be Open About Your Dietary Habits Up Front.

The people I know who live healthy lifestyles that are deliberate with their food choices are open about it. I think that if you are a person that is living a healthy lifestyle, then simply be open about it. I think where the stereotype comes in is when a date has an idea of a large dinner, filled with heart food, drinks, and dessert afterwards. Although I discourage this type of expectation setting it does still happen. I think when you simply share your lifestyle choices upfront then you avoid your date misunderstanding.

Understand that most people love when you show up for the first dinner date ready to eat.

In America, food tends to be an intricate part of our social life. We tie food into almost everything we do. The old phrase “the way to the man’s heart is through his belly” is a very powerful statement from the past. Food tends to be present at all of our celebrations. For many people a first date is a celebration/exploration of something that has the potential of being the start of a beautiful thing so it is only natural to celebrate it over dinner. I believe you can tell how hearty of a meal someone is planning by the restaurant they are suggesting. If you use the restaurant as a guiding point then it will allow you to plan accordingly.

When it comes to this touchy topic I think it is best to be open not only in mind but also in conversation. Being non- judgmental and remembering that times have changed is very important.
