Dating Advice Don’t Be a Victim of Yourself

Dating Advice: Don’t Be a Victim of Yourself

During a very unusual 6:45 am commute this morning (if you know me rarely am I on the road that early) I happened to come across a radio program that spoke a lot about dating. They had segments ranging from reviewing some dating/relationship survey to one of the hosts sharing a personal dating dilemma. As I listened to this show that I have no clue what it is called the dating coach in me kept thinking…. “if only single people would get out of their own way!”

One of the radio hosts had shared with his co-hosts that he has met a gal that he really liked and they exchanged phone numbers. The gal sent him a very sweet text message and the texting between the two went back and forth. He sent the last text 10 days ago and was all up in arms because she had not responded. He was wondering what he should do. My thought is nothing ventured nothing gained. Yes, there is an art to dating and attraction but his fear was if he sent another message would he come across as desperate. One of his co-hosts kept telling him to wait a few more days which I disagree with.  There is a difference between playing hard to get and being just plan stupid. He can craft a playful flirty message to engage the women and if she does not respond then he knows his answer and must move on. Most women if they are seriously on the dating scene they enjoy communication within 3 to 4 days.  Depending on the part of the country you are in 10 days is way to long and is a kiss of death.  The odds are if she doesn’t respond it is more likely she moved on vs not having been interested in the first place.

Another story they brought up was how one of the co-hosts friend’s had gone on 1 date with a guy. She enjoyed it so much and was so excited about it she changed her Facebook status to “in a relationship”.  The guy was a Facebook friend of hers and completely disappeared.  Clearly she scared the guy away. Now, the obvious reason is the Facebook status and that the man was probably thinking, woooo this chick is moving way to fast. On the other hand, we have NO CLUE what happened on the date. Did she equally come across as to eager on the date. One could argue that the Facebook poster simply didn’t want other guys chasing her and thought it would be a good idea to tell the world she didn’t want to date anyone else till she was done dating this guy. Either way it is clear this gal had no clue how to dance this dating tango.

Right now the market is flooded with dating experts giving dating advice. Single people are desperate to find the secret formula that will make them successful in finding love and a relationship. There is definitely an art to dating and I do agree that daters do need to learn how to be a dating artist however some old fashioned common sense will take the average dater a long way. An element of my coaching is teaching my clients to recognize and to change their own behaviors that are hindering their efforts.
